Shhhhh! I know, it’s supposed to be a surprise. There’s this woman you’ve been dating, and you think she’s the one, so you’re off to buy her an engagement ring. So you get it, she cries, says yes, and then…wait, what? You mean you have to go back to the jewelry store for the wedding bands? Why didn’t you just look at wedding sets, specifically diamond ring sets, in the first place?

It’s almost surprising how long it has taken wedding bands to stop being so much of an afterthought and to start being a part of wedding ring sets. Granted, some of this has to do with the fact that the custom of men wearing a band is a recently new one, at least in comparison to how long women have been wearing them, but it still strikes me as funny that so much focus is places on the engagement ring and yet, when the big day comes, instead of being part of thought out and well-designed wedding sets, most people exchange two bland rings of gold or silver. If it is important enough to wear every day, it deserves enough to be just as special, and that is why, when shopping for the big days, wedding sets are the way to go.

The advantage of choosing from a selection of wedding sets instead of purchasing an engagement ring first and then deciding after what wedding bands you should wear is that is gives both you and the jeweler the ability to decide on the perfect look for rings that go together. This is especially important as more and more people are opting to choose from diamond ring sets, leaving the plain unadorned wedding bands in the past. That is an important first step for the two of you to consider. It’s no secret that some people prefer a little more glitz while other people have a preference to remain understated, and there are wedding sets for all types of personalities. And even if you aren’t the type that would think to look at diamond ring sets, that doesn’t mean you should stick to the “buy the engagement rings first and then come back for the wedding bands later” mindset. If you end up buying rings not chosen from a collection of wedding sets, there may be differences in the quality or finish that could become noticeable over time, something you don’t want. This is one of the most important purchases you will ever make. Treat it as such.
