My grandmother, at the ripe young age of eighty-eight, gave me the most beautiful collection of cameo lockets yesterday for my birthday. Since I was turning twenty-five and finally being considered by the family to be a mature adult, she thought that the family heirloom would be an appropriate gift.

Back in the 1940s, my Grandmother received this gorgeous piece of jewelry from her grandmother. It is a kind of tradition in my family. It was purchased by my great-great-grandfather from a traveling jeweler. Every woman in my family has cherished the locket. I must say, it is a rather beautiful sight. It is a piece of ivory with a picture of the Virgin Mary carved into it. Everyone who sees the locket always says how envious they are of such an important and magnificent piece of family history.

When I get married and have lots and lots of beautiful children running around, I will always be thinking about my grandmother’s collection of cameo lockets. It is like the glue that holds our family together. Sometimes we just sit around and talk about family members who have since left us and the amazing memories and stories they have left behind. Those memories are priceless.
